Software Engineer Intern
Description
Join the LP DAAC team at the EROS Center to build and improve software that supports Earth science data services. You’ll contribute to real products used by researchers worldwide, learn modern engineering practices, and collaborate with a friendly, mission-driven team.
What you’ll do
-
Develop, test, and document small features and fixes in service components (e.g., data workflows, APIs, and utilities).

Write clean, maintainable code (primarily Python) with unit tests and code reviews.

Help with data/metadata quality checks and automation; use AI tools (Claude) to accelerate archive reconciliation tasks under guidance.

Contribute to build/deploy pipelines and basic CI tasks, following team standards.

Participate in agile ceremonies and sprint work (backlog grooming, stand-ups, demos).
Minimum qualifications

Currently pursuing a BS/BA in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field; rising junior/senior or graduate student preferred.

Coursework/projects in programming (Python).

Familiarity with Git and collaborative development.

Clear communication, willingness to learn, and attention to detail.
Nice to have
-
Exposure to cloud services (AWS), containers, or Linux.

Experience with data pipelines, geospatial data, or REST APIs.

Basic understanding of testing frameworks (pytest) and CI/CD.
Special Requirements
-
Three years of continuous residency in the U.S. for issuance of a Government Security credential
-
Ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation for facility access
